How to Write a Paragraph, or, Paragraph-Writing

Hello Friends...

Sure, we all are doing well... Be careful, we must stay fit and shouldn't fall ill getting our studies affected. We shall eat and drink healthy, exercise regularly, and won't avoid our domestic and social responsibilities. And whatever time we get for ourselves at the end of the day, we must study hard for most of the time, so that we learn to think... and learn. We simply cannot afford to stop thinking, for we are learners, and we are the chosen ones who got the scope to learn...

Let's learn to think first...

Paragraph-Writing

The Art of Brevity

Here, we meet together to discuss how to write a composition on a topic, specifically,- a paragraph. Composing a paragraph on any topic is particularly an important skill, for one requires to be the master of the art of brevity while limiting him/herself to just a paragraph.

To Begin with...

What do we require to begin with? A decent knowledge about the topic on which we are going to compose the paragraph. How can you proceed if you don't have sufficient knowledge to think and speak about the topic?

The Research Required

So, we need to study about the topic to begin with. You might google the topic, go through a few books or articles if available, and might consult your friends and teachers to gain some insight into the topic.

The Organisation

That's the easy part, of course. Now we need to organise whatever we have gathered and learnt till so far. And this is the hard part, as far I do feel for myself.

Different Ways

How do we organise our thought process? We may follow the chronology, or the time sequence, if it is feasible. We might organise by the cause and effect relationship, if that's possible. Some characters or incidents might also serve as  proper associations to link up the different aspects of the topics for our discussions. That is to say, there are numerous ways to get our thought process organised, and we need to choose the ones that suit our requirements the most. After you process and organise your information, you form a mind-map of the topic on your own. I have a visual representation of the various meanings/aspects associated with the word 'search' from the website of Visual Thesaurus [https://www.visualthesaurus.com] linked up with the factor of 'distance'/'proximity' to help you understand the notion of mind-map-

Maybe, you will find the visual helpful in understanding the process we need to undertake while attempting to compose a paragraph.

Hands on

Let's attempt to compose one, shall we?-

The Topic

So what's the topic of discussion here? The benefits of early morning exercises, right? [I am sure you didn't consider 'early morning exercises' to be our topic here. Following the instruction to get the appropriate topic is very important and one should not rush about this.] What do we know about this? Are morning exercises not included in your daily life?

Well, even if you don't include morning exercises to be a part of your life, that doesn't mean that you should not be concerned about the benefits of early morning exercises. Rather, you should attempt to know more about the benefits to see if they are motivating enough...

The Brainstorming And the Mind-map

Exercise

What is exercise meant for? Why should we exercise regularly? I'm sure I need not explain...

But we are not concerned about just exercises. Rather our concern here is early morning exercises. What's so special about early morning exercises? Why do you think we might reap more benefits in case of early morning exercises? Let's use our common sense to find out...

Early Morning Exercise

Have you ever observed your neighbourhood in the early morning? Even if you haven't, will it be very difficult to assume that your neighbourhood is more likely to be peaceful in the early morning than the rest of the day?  The pollution rate is also likely to stay low in the early morning, isn't it? Hence, most of the yoga gurus point out that you get the scope to breathe in more fresh air and gain peace of mind when you attempt to do your exercises in the early morning. Well, you need to attempt this first before you decide to disagree...

But is that all? Don't you have the hint of any other benefit in your mind? Those who have already developed the habit of early morning exercises are certainly aware of what we might tend to consider as the most valuable benefit of it. It's time management.

Whenever we do our exercises regularly, we somehow reap the associated health-benefits. Early morning exercises provide us with some extra health benefit as the environment stays least polluted then. We get a less polluted air to breathe in. We are also likely to find a more peaceful environment to settle in quickly. But only early morning exercises provide us with the additional opportunity to start the day earlier. An early start means a better time management, and a better time management means more free time, and more free time means lesser stress than the usual.

Don't you find that motivating enough? Let me know if you disagree.

Research on Your Own

You need to study more if you want to know more about this given topic of our discussion. When you are satisfied with your effort, why don't you rather try to organise what you have gathered till so far?

Organise on Your Own

This is obviously a topic that might get discussed with a scientific approach. You may find the cause and effect relationship beneficial to discuss such an issue. Would you like to start your paragraph with the benefit that seems to be the most important among all? Or would you like to start with the rest, and prefer to conclude with the most important one? Which approach seems to be more natural for you? It's your prerogative, and you need to decide which approach suits your requirements the best.

Assess Mine

How do you find my approach? Do you think it might suite your requirements as well? Are you wondering where is the paragraph that I myself have composed? Well, maybe you have not been enough attentive then while participating in the discussion. Would you mind going through thoroughly once again?

The Heading

Oh yes, you should not forget to start with a heading while composing your paragraph. I have omitted the heading part in my paragraph. What would be the easiest way to write an appropriate heading for our paragraph? For me, it is always the topic itself. That is to say, for this particular paragraph, I would like to have 'The Benefits of Early Morning Exercises' as the heading of my paragraph. Do you have something more interesting in your mind?

I will be all ears to listen from you... All the best.

Comments

  1. I sincerely thank Baidehi Sengupta for suggesting me the idea of providing the visual to help learners understand the concept of mind-mapping.
I look forward to receive more suggestions to add value to the discussion...

  2. I would suggest a little elaboration on mental map would be immensely useful for students not only for paragraph writing but also for reporting, biography writing...
As it's the most effective for organisation of thoughts, they must be guided how to accept and even discard ideas for a better organisation.
